Enugu State Water Corporation was established in 1991 based on the Enugu State Water Corporation Edict which governs its operations. The edict was enacted in 1997 and amended in 1999.
ENSWC is responsible for water provision to the Urban populace of Enugu State comprising mainly of about 1,200,000 people residing in Enugu Urban and about 386,000 Populace of Nsukka urban each spanning through 85 sq kms and 30 sq kms respectively
There is an existing State Water Law CAP 76 Volume III, 2004. The mandate of the Corporation is to develop, provide, conserve and distribute in the state water for public, domestic and industrial purposes and to charge adequate fees.
Another Law also came into effect to establish Enugu State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (ENRUWASSA) such that Enugu State Water Corporation is now responsible for urban water supply while ENRUWASSA is responsible for Rural Water Supply.
Given the internationally recommended water requirement of 120 litres/capita/day, this will entail the production and distribution of 190,320m3 to serve the Enugu and Nsukka Urban Populations.
The Corporation is required to surpass this production level to be able to meet the water needs of the populace of the other urban areas of the state.
